The Desert Island Dozen is back with its second installment of listener-driven programming planned for Sept. 20 – 22 on WUSM 88.5–FM from 9a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. The three-day event, which serves as a sustaining member drive for the station, will welcome 18 of the radio stations listeners into the studio. Over the course of an hour, they will play and discuss 12 of their favorite songs with station manager Justin Martin, known to fans of Southern Miss Radio as ‘Mean Willie Green.’

“As the only community radio station in the Pine Belt area, we are always looking for ways to get involved with our listeners,” said Lesley Sanders-Wood, business manager of the Student Media Center. “We had an amazing time at our spring event and we want to continue to bring that kind of unique content to our listeners.”

Southern Miss Radio is best known for offering an alternative to the homogenized commercial programming offered by other stations. At WUSM, they are committed to playing great songs that don’t have a platform because they didn’t sell a million copies while also providing experience in all aspects of radio production for students enrolled at Southern Miss.

“Being around music all the time, you become isolated,” Martin said. “The Desert Island Dozen gives us the opportunity to see what resonates with the listeners when they get involved in programming. I am always surprised, and I think the listeners will be too.”

All funds raised during the Desert Island Dozen and other WUSM events are used to update equipment and software to keep graduates competitive in the current media marketplace. WUSM, which broadcasts from the Hattiesburg campus of USM, is the Pine Belt’s only community radio station and provides hands-on experience within the radio industry to students.
