On Nov. 14, Earth experienced its largest supermoon since 1948.
According to USM physics and astronomy professor Christopher Sirola, the supermoon occurs when the moon draws closer to Earth due to its elliptical shape.
The moon appeared 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than it does on average during the Nov. 14 occurrence.
The next supermoon will occur Dec. 14.
