Two University of Southern Mississippi students, twin sisters who share a love for fashion, decided one day that they were tired of seeing unused clothes in their friends’ closets. They then made plans to host a “Swap, Sell and Buy” party, which is sponsored by their fashion alteration and reconstruction company Two Headed Woman.
Hanna Bowie, cofounder of Two Headed Woman, said she and her sister got the idea for the event while scrolling through videos on YouTube.
“We got the idea to host a Swap, Sell and Buy party inHattiesburg because we’ve got so many friends who have lots of clothing sitting in their rooms or closets that never get used,” said Jasmine Bowie, cofounder of Two Headed Woman.
The event will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Towne Park in downtown Hattiesburg. Swap, Sell and Buy parties are a popular means for vendors to share, exchange and purchase clothing from other vendors.
The Hattiesburg party will provide an opportunity for students, fashion boutique owners, independent designers and many others to come together in one place with clothing that is no longer worn with the purpose of buying, selling or exchanging the clothing for something different or new.
Both Hanna and Jasmine Bowie are fashion merchandising majors who plan to graduate in the fall of 2013. The sisters started designing their own clothing in middle school, and when they got to Southern Miss they took their love for fashion and designing by starting Two Headed Woman.
The party is just one more way for the sisters to showcase their love of fashion and help others at the same time.
Jasmine said the event will not only connect the fashion communities of Jackson, Hattiesburg and New Orleans by bringing independent designers and stylists in but also promote recycling and repurposing clothing among younger generations.
Vendors will consist mostly of students who are willing to swap out or sell clothing to other students.
Community members who plan to attend the event but are not sure if they will participate or not in the swapping, buying and selling of the clothing are encouraged to bring products and monetary donations. Donations of plastic bags, tables, chairs and more, along with any unwanted clothing, will be donated to Hope House of Hattiesburg. Hope House’s mission is to provide physical, emotional or spiritual assistance to the area’s homeless citizens.
The Bowie twins named Two Headed Woman because of the twins’ close bond and natural connection to one another. According to a press release, the Bowies have begun hosting events through their company such as D.I.Y. classes, fashion shows and now “Swap, Sale and Buy” parties.
