Thursday night Reed Green Coliseum was alive with anticipation and excitement as The University of Southern Mississippi’s National Pan-Hellenic Council presented its new members to those in attendance at the council’s first Joint New Member Show.
NPHC called this show “The Premier” and Trent Johnson, public relations chair for NPHC executive board, said it was the first time a Joint New Member Show took place at Southern Miss.
“… The show is used to introduce new members of any [NPHC] fraternity and sorority… Each fraternity and sorority will come out with their own individual show,” Johnson said. “It’s pretty much a big celebration.”
He said 69 new members were revealed to excited family, friends and members from USM and other NPHC sororities and fraternities from around the state who made the trip to Southern Miss to support the new members of their respective chapters.
“People in attendance got to see friends, family and classmates revealed to USM as new members of their fraternity or sorority, so there was a lot of excitement in the coliseum,” he added.
“The new member presentation was something new for everyone,” said Gabrielle Price, a new initiate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. who was revealed to her family and friends at the event. “I think it will bring the organizations closer together. I am excited to be a part of my sorority.”
“It’s an exciting time because these students are being reintroduced to campus as members of a new sorority or fraternity,” Johnson said.
NPHC at Southern Miss is composed of the following sororities and fraternities: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
