Southern Miss (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) faced North Texas (6-1, 2-1 C-USA) on the road in a C-USA showdown on Saturday, with the final score being 30-7 in favor of North Texas

“This was a frustrating loss for us,” Southern Miss Head Coach Jay Hopson said. “We had several opportunities wherein we just didn’t capitalize. Credit North Texas, they are a good football team and Mason Fine just finds ways to make things happen.”

The Southern Miss offense struggled to create an identity throughout the entire game, committing two turnovers in the game, but the defense did keep them in the game in the first half. Both teams remained scoreless in the first quarter, and North Texas only held a 10-7 advantage over the Golden Eagles

North Texas got their first touchdown with a 53-yard pass from Mason Fine to Jalen Guyton with 13:11 left in the second quarter. Guyton finished the game with seven receptions for 124 yards and the touchdown.

The Golden Eagles did score their first and only touchdown of the game following the North Texas score when sophomore quarterback Jack Abraham connected with sophomore wide receiver Quez Watkins for a 44-yard touchdown pass, putting the score at 7-7. A North Texas field goal with 7:11 left to play was the only other score for either team in the first half.

Despite the close halftime score, North Texas went on a 20-point scoring run on the Southern Miss defense in the second half.

Sophomore North Texas running back DeAndre Torrey scored three second-half touchdowns which opened up what once was a close game for the Mean Green. Southern Miss had no answer for Torrey in the second half, who rushed for 17 carries, 95 yards and the three touchdowns.

North Texas put up more than 450 plus yards of total offense in the game, but Southern Miss did hold North Texas to some key third down stops. The Mean Green also finished the game by converting only five-of-12 third-down attempts.

Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham completed 29-of-42 passes for 318 yards along with a touchdown and an interception. In the running game, freshman running back Trivenskey Mosley ran for 73 yards on 11 carries, his highest output of the season.

The Southern Miss offensive line also experienced some struggles against the North Texas defense. The line allowed four sacks and 14 tackles for loss on the day and generated pressure on Abraham throughout the afternoon.

Southern Miss will return home next weekend for its homecoming game versus UTSA in another C-USA showdown. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at M.M Roberts Stadium.
