The SwitchYard is one of Hattiesburg’s most unique venues, and it is quickly rising in popularity among locals and college students. Located downtown, the venue offers an entertaining experience that combines indoor and outdoor activities.
The idea for SwitchYard came during the Covid-19 lockdown. According to Louis and Marty Gagnet, the owners of the venue, they noticed a gap in Hattiesburg’s entertainment options.
“SwitchYard was a lockdown baby,” Louis explained. “We saw a need for a venue where Hattiesburgers, especially college kids, could have both indoor and outdoor spaces to move their bodies.”
This realization led to the creation of a venue offering yard games, live music, and a welcoming atmosphere. However, the journey to open was not without its hurdles.
“The biggest challenge in opening a new venue like the SwitchYard has been working within the constraints of developing a historic metal building with a shoestring budget,” Marty said. “We have overcome most of these challenges with lots of sweat.”
One of the factors that sets SwitchYard apart from other venues in the area is its historical location.
“SwitchYard is housed in a metal machine shop built in 1927, which was commissioned to support the war effort during World War II,” Louis explained.
This unique setting adds a historical charm to the venue, giving guests a sense of stepping into a piece of Hattiesburg’s past while enjoying modern entertainment.
The name “SwitchYard” itself was carefully chosen to reflect Hattiesburg’s identity.
“We wanted to pay homage to the Hub City’s rich history as a railroad hub,” Marty said. “It also refers to the variety of yard games available at SwitchYard, including beach volleyball, pool, and cornhole.”
The atmosphere at SwitchYard is designed to be inclusive and laid-back.
“We aim to create an atmosphere comfortable for anyone and everyone who walks through our doors,” Marty added. “If we had to pick another vibe, it would be beach vibes.”
The SwitchYard is also home to a wide range of events, from Renaissance fairs to wedding receptions, concerts, and karaoke nights.
“We host everything from Greek life events to all-day music festivals.” Louis said.
College students have a special place at SwitchYard, thanks to the new “College Night” event.
“We started College Night in response to suggestions from USM students,” Marty explained, “It’s the only college night in growing downtown Hattiesburg, featuring local DJs, drink specials, and giveaway contests.”
The venue plans to host College Night every Thursday during the Fall 2024 semester and hopes to continue the event in the spring if it proves successful.
“We want the college community to embrace us as their own, give us feedback, and help us improve,” Louis said.
Looking ahead, SwitchYard is partnering with local non-profit 601BeachVolleyball to bring beach volleyball leagues to Hattiesburg this fall.
