The Spectrum Center (TSC) recently hosted its monthly Drag Show at The Fat Cat in downtown Hattiesburg. HattiesDrag Amateur Drag Show is a quarterly event that gives new and upcoming drag queens and kings a place to debut on stage. The monthly drag shows also act as a fundraiser, and the show ended up raising more than two thousand dollars while simultaneously giving drag queens a chance to show off their talents. The money will be used by TSC to provide aid and resources for LGBTQ+ individuals in need around the city. The show also hosted Anita Razr, a guest performer at the drag show, who holds the title of Southern States Bearded Queen 2024.
Strawberrie Zorra, a rising drag queen who started out in Hattiesburg in 2023, is also a USM student who performed at the show.
“As long as we go out there and have fun, put on a performance, that’s what matters,” Strawberrie said. “For there to be 23 performers and the crowd is still giving energy each and every single time is incredible… it’s something that a lot of the time performers search for so hard but aren’t able to find.”
The Spectrum Center (TSC) is a nonprofit organization that operates in Hattiesburg and provides a safe and educated space for people of all gender and sexuality identities. All members of the LGBTQ+ community are welcome in this space, and TSC works every day towards advocating for and supporting individuals around Hattiesburg and beyond. Donations earned from events help to pay for future events, but also supply things like food, clothes, and even shelter for LGBTQ+ members. Mickie Stratos, the president of The Spectrum Center, shared their thoughts on the recent show.
“Every show is different, and we always love when the community shows up and packs the room,” said Mickie. “The performing artists appreciate the love and support, and we’re always thrilled that so many folks come to enjoy the safe, welcoming, and joyful Queer environment we work so hard to cultivate.”
The Spectrum Center is also celebrating their 10th year anniversary this year. The organization has put on several special events such as Time Capsule Dedication, Adult Queer Camp, and Gay Prom. The center will also be hosting an LGBTQ+ Mini Film Fest on September 28 and the Trans Day of Remembrance Conference later in the year.
