USM students recently turned out in droves to an on-campus involvement fair hosted by the Southern Miss Office of Leadership and Student Involvement. Held in the Thad Cochran Center and the Union, the event gave students the opportunity to browse tables, represented by more than 20 student clubs and organizations, for extracurricular activities and to see what suited them best. Some organizations that were present included the Student Alumni Association, Anime Club, and Sexual Assault Prevention Ambassadors (SAPA).
Clubs like SAPA were only a few with a specific goal of helping students be heard and helping those who are often unheard. Their representatives also used the fair as a way to talk to students about concerns surrounding sexual assault.
“There are 15 percent more sexual assaults that happen at the beginning of fall semester to Thanksgiving break that go unreported,” said Gabby McCroskey, President of SAPA. “There are more freshman females that are targeted because there is less supervision.”
From cultural clubs to academic societies, the fair also featured many diverse groups aimed at enhancing the student experience. Attendees navigated through colorful booths, engaging with club representatives eager to share their missions and upcoming activities. Other highlights included the Spanish Club, which hosts activities to promote the Spanish language and culture, and the Artist Guild which caters to artists and art lovers. Overall, the involvement fair offered benefits to all in attendance.
“This fair is a fantastic way for students to connect and discover what our campus has to offer,” said Amarrie Bland, a member of I.D.E.A.L Women. “Getting involved not only boosts their college experience but also helps them build lasting friendships and develop valuable skills.”
In addition to student organizations, various campus departments set up informational tables to inform students about academic resources, mental health services, and career counseling. Workshops and demonstrations were scheduled throughout the day, allowing students to take part in interactive activities and learn more about specific interests.
Organizers reported a significant turnout as the day ended, with many students eager to engage in campus life. Students are encouraged to visit the campus involvement website or stop by the student activities office for more information on student organizations and upcoming events.
