The University of Southern Mississippi established a Faculty Ombud position over the summer for the first time in the history of USM.
According to Faculty Ombud Andrew P. Haley, his role is to provide a safe environment for the staff and faculty to come and talk about any issues they may have.
“The Faculty Ombud’s job is to assist faculty when they encounter workplace problems that get in the way of their teachings or research,” said Haley. He said that his job is to explain the policies and procedures along with helping to make sure they are followed properly.
As stated in a draft of the ombud charter created by the university, “the Ombud position reports directly to the University President and operates independently of all university structures. The university and its representatives are pledged to respect the independence of the Faculty Ombud and there can be no retribution for seeking the advice of the ombud.”
Haley said he is also there to prepare faculty on what actions to take over a situation of any type. These situations can vary from a simple argument between coworkers, all the way up to sexual assault cases. He is available to help mediate and advise what actions should take place next, as well as to counsel the victim.
In addition to being a resource for faculty, Haley also holds the university staff accountable for the university policies and rules to make everything run smoothly.
“It’s a big position with a small description but it’s incredibly fulfilling. I get to go home knowing that I was able to help someone,” said Haley.
Haley is an associate professor in the School of Humanities. He completed the International Ombuds Association’s Foundations course.
In addition to creating the Ombud position, administration officials created a website independent of the university to contact Haley or any of the provost’s offices. Faculty and staff may choose to remain anonymous when using the website services for help and support.
The office of the Ombud is located at 113J McCain Library. Haley can be reached by email at [email protected]. or through the Ombud website at https://www.usm.edu/faculty-ombud/index.php
