The second annual Clyde Kennard Lecture and Scholar Visit is slated to be held on October 14 and 15.
For this iteration of the annual lecture, the visiting scholar will be Matthew F. Delmont who will be giving a lecture titled “Half-American: The Epic Story of African Americans fighting World War II at Home and Abroad.”
Matthew Delmont is the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of History at Dartmouth College. He is also a Guggenheim fellow and an expert on African American history and civil rights. He is an accomplished author and has written five books including Half American, Black Quotidian and Why Busing Failed.
His work has been featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, NPR and several academic journals.
On Monday, October 14, there will be a welcome reception, a tour, talk and book signing with Matthew Delmont by 6 p.m. at the African American Military Museum.
On Tuesday, October 15, there will be a reception from 5-6pm at the Thad Cochran Center 216, which will be followed by the Kennard lecture that will be held in the Joe Paul Theater (Thad Cochran Center) from 6-8 p.m.
The Clyde Kennard Lecture series seeks to honor the legacy of its namesake, Clyde Kennard, who was the first African American to attempt enrollment at the Segregated Mississippi Southern College (now known as The University of Southern Mississippi) in the 1950s.
The event is being sponsored by the Center for Black Studies, African American Military History Museum, The First Bank, University Forum, Dale Center for the Study of War and Society, and Forrest County NAACP.
