Southern Miss students interested in learning a new language are encouraged to immerse themselves in the culture of that language, and the university has many ways to do so.
When learning a new language, it can be difficult to become fluent in it. But USM has many resources to help those embarking on bilingual quests, such as classes, clubs, one-on-one tutoring, native professors, and much more.
Liseth Wug is a USM Spanish professor with two bachelor’s degrees; four master’s degrees in education, language commerce, and translation; and 11 years of language-teaching experience. She speaks multiple languages, and she believes that the best way to learn a new language is to emerge yourself in the culture of that language and use the resources the USM has to offer to do so.
She also expressed that cultural immersion in a college setting enhances language understanding by providing real-world experiences and practice.
“In a college setting, students are exposed to authentic interactions with their native teachers and that enables them to use the target language in meaningful ways,” she said. “Examples of effective cultural activities include language exchange programs, study abroad opportunities, cultural festivals, and language clubs.”
The university has language exchange programs, study abroad options, cultural festivals, and language study groups that are examples of effective cultural activities. Wug shared that by becoming involved in the community, you will not only gain speaking experience, but you will also meet people who can introduce you to new experiences as well.
“By participating in local cultural activities and volunteering, students can enhance their understanding of different cultures, at these events you may also have the opportunity to meet native friends,” she said.
USM offers tutoring services, cultural organizations, and instruction from native teachers to facilitate this immersion. Time limits and language anxiety are common problems in cultural immersion that can be overcome with proactive methods and community support. Fluency requires interaction with native speakers, which students can obtain on campus by joining clubs and going to cultural events. Cultural immersion promotes long-term language proficiency and cultural competency, which helps many students have successful language learning experiences.
