The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame recently unveiled its Induction Class of 2025, which features two inductees with Southern Miss ties – Scott Berry and Derrick Nix. The eight-member class was chosen after excelling in football, basketball, baseball, and golf.
“Our selection committee has once again excelled in identifying remarkable individuals for this class,” said Museum Executive Director Bill Blackwell in a statement. “Each inductee has made significant contributions to their sport and has embodied the spirit of excellence that we celebrate. Their legacies inspire future generations of athletes in Mississippi and beyond.”
Berry, USM’s current associate athletic director for community relations, served as head baseball coach at Southern Miss for 14 seasons and led the team to nine NCAA tournament appearances. He was overjoyed to be included as a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.
“I’m extremely honored to be a part of the 2025 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame class,” Berry said. “I appreciate my family and the sacrifices they made in order for me to live my dream. I’m very grateful to all the players and coaches who have been with me on this journey. This recognition is shared with many.”
Nix joins Berry as the other inductee with USM ties. The former Golden Eagle was a record-breaking running back for the Black and Gold. He’s a longtime college football coach, currently serving as Offensive Coordinator for Auburn University.
Other Class of 2025 inductees include:
Steve Freeman: A standout defensive back at Mississippi State and in the NFL, currently a veteran NFL official.
Mike Justice: A veteran high school football coach with a record of 297 wins and 98 losses over 35 years, including four state championships.
Dexter McCluster: An Ole Miss All-SEC and All-American running back, receiver, and kick returner, who enjoyed an 8-season NFL career.
Steve Rives: A high school and college basketball coach with over 700 career wins, known for success at Jackson Prep and Delta State University.
Robbie Webb: A golf professional at Canton Country Club and Deerfield, who mentored numerous junior golfers.
Mo Williams – The current Head Basketball Coach at Jackson State University and Murrah High School graduate, who went on to play at Alabama and professionally, enjoying a 13-year NBA career.
All the athletes will be officially inducted during the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, scheduled for August 1-2, 2025. Tickets for the event will be available starting January 2025. This celebration supports the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to honoring individuals who have brought recognition and pride to the state through their achievements.
