Mayor Toby Barker, a USM alum, recently received the Mississippi Tourism Association’s (MTA) Governmental Tourism Leadership Award for his contributions to the growth of Hattiesburg’s tourism industry.
Barker was excited about the recognition but was quick to acknowledge the importance of partnerships in growing Hattiesburg’s tourism economy.
“Tourism is a crucial part of Hattiesburg’s growth, and it has been a team effort to make our city a vibrant place for visitors,” said Barker. “I am grateful for the ongoing partnerships with Visit Hattiesburg, the Hattiesburg Convention Commission and the many talented citizens and organizations that continue to drive these efforts.”
Since taking office in 2017, Barker has focused on tourism as a key factor in economic development. Working with Visit Hattiesburg and the Hattiesburg Convention Commission, his efforts have resulted in increased visitation and positioned the city as a destination for cultural and outdoor activities. Key initiatives during his tenure include expanding sports tourism, enhancing outdoor recreation through the development of blueways and greenways, and promoting public art through large-scale murals and sculptures.
One prominent event established during Barker’s administration is the Midnight on Front Street New Year’s Eve celebration, which attracts over 10,000 attendees each year. Additionally, the city has promoted parks, university activities, school events, and community traditions like Mardi Gras and fall festivities, further boosting its reputation as a regional hub for arts, culture, and entertainment.
Barker has also worked to secure state and federal funding for projects such as the Pine Belt Blueways and the Hattiesburg Community Arts Center, which have expanded outdoor recreation and cultural offerings. His role as President of the Mississippi Municipal League (2023-2024) and experience as a state legislator have supported the city’s economic and tourism objectives.
Before the pandemic, visitor spending in Hattiesburg exceeded $300 million annually. Barker’s advocacy has helped maintain the city’s focus on tourism development and infrastructure investment. Hattiesburg officials also recently boasted about the $582 in tourism revenue the city collected in 2023.
The MTA Governmental Tourism Leadership Award highlights Barker’s role in promoting Hattiesburg as a thriving tourism destination.
