As universities across the nation recently celebrated National Transfer Student Week, transfer students at Southern Miss discovered new opportunities to connect and build community on campus. The week-long celebration featured a mix of in-person and virtual events to accommodate traditional and online learners.
For many students, the transition to a larger university can be overwhelming.
“I came from a junior college, went to a small community college, and so it was just like I come to this big place and there were lots of opportunities to get involved but, it’s just kind of hard to find your place at first,” said Brady Williams, President of TSA, who credits the Transfer Student Association (TSA) with helping him navigate the transition. “I’ve always been an introvert. So, TSA really helped with that, really helped find my place.”
This sentiment of finding community resonates with online learners as well.
“Since I am an online student, that’s something I do kind of not have, is a community,” said Hope Sanders, another transfer student who found her place through TSA. “Being a transfer student opened up a lot of doors because we have organizations like this where all you have to do is be a transfer student. It helped me find a community where I didn’t have one.”
The festivities kicked off with daily Faculty and Staff Spotlights throughout the week, highlighting mentors who have made significant impacts on transfer students’ academic journeys. On the second day of the event, the TSA organized its Fall Festival offering transfer students a chance to enjoy food, games, and pumpkin painting activities.
Recognizing the growing population of online learners, the Office of Online Learning also hosted a Virtual Game Night as part of the festivities. This event ensured that distance learners like Sanders could participate in the week’s celebrations and connect with fellow students. The celebration concluded with “Transfer Treats” at Shoemaker Square.
These events and organizations assist students with finding their place on campus, whether they’re transitioning from a small community college or joining the university community online. National Transfer Student Week provided opportunities for building connections and celebrating transfer students’ unique educational journeys.
