The Tri Delta sorority held its annual Body Image Week from Nov. 4-8, featuring a series of events promoting positive body image, self-acceptance, and mental well-being.
Throughout the week, events were held for sorority members and the public. Activities included writing encouraging messages with chalk outside the Tri Delta house, creating a positive affirmations mirror, and holding a balloon release to symbolize the release of negative emotions.
One of the key events was a talk on Nov. 5 at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church by Grace Valentine, an author, blogger, podcast host, and speaker. The event was open to all college-aged and high school girls. The goal was to spread a message of Godly positivity.
The balloon release, held later in the week, encouraged participants to write about positive influences in their lives, while also releasing negative emotions on notecards attached to the balloons.
Taylor Barkley, a senior psychology major and biological sciences minor, served as the Body Image Chair for Tri Delta.
“Body image week is a designed week for everyone to focus and promote positive body image, self-acceptance and mental well-being,” Barkley said. “Tri Delta takes this time to sincerely stop and take a second to recognize the reality of how we see our bodies, that can ultimately impact the way we see ourselves.
“Body image week has a powerful impact because it helps normalize discussions around body image and mental health,” Barkley said. “Students can gain confidence and a sense of belonging, realizing they are not alone in their struggles.”
As part of her role, Barkley organizes activities that encourage both chapter members and the community to appreciate their bodies and prioritize mental health.
“I work alongside every member within our chapter to ensure all Tri Delta’s feel valued,” Barkley said.
Barkley emphasized the ongoing nature of body image awareness.
“Body image is an ongoing journey,” she said. “I believe events like these help reinforce a healthy and inclusive perspective.”
