Pickleball, a rapidly growing sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, is becoming increasingly popular in Hattiesburg, especially among college students. Known for its easy-to-learn rules and short game times, the sport has attracted a diverse range of players and offers numerous health benefits.
Played with a paddle and a plastic ball, pickleball is typically enjoyed on a smaller court, which can be set up both indoors and outdoors. Games generally last between 15 and 45 minutes, making it an ideal activity for those with busy schedules.
“I wanted to start playing pickleball because all my friends were playing, so I decided to give it a try, and now we all go two to three times a week, and it is really great exercise,” said Tyler Threatt, a junior at USM.
Threatt also said that she has seen many other younger people playing and that it is good to see everyone getting outside and having fun. Threatt and her friends play at various courts in Hattiesburg.
As the sport’s popularity grows, the City of Hattiesburg has been working to expand access to pickleball facilities.
“We are continuing to develop pickleball courts among Hattiesburg to keep up with the demand,” said Betsy Mercier, the director of parks and recreation.
Currently, there are four courts at Kamper Park, one at Ebenezer Baptist Church, eight at Lamar County, and five at David H. Anthony Leisure Park that are open to the public. There are also a few others that may require a fee or membership to play at.
“It is a great amenity for all ages, and it is becoming more popular with the younger generations, but also popular with the retirement community since it is a low-impact sport,” said Mercier. “We see people out here playing from sunup to sun down.”
This popular sport is versatile and for all ages. It is easy on your body but also allows you to be active. Many go to stay fit, but also to be outside and with friends and family. It has great health benefits for everyone.
“Aerobic and endurance exercises strengthen your heart, improve circulation, and improve the heart’s ability to pump blood to your muscles,” said Ari Cofer in a May 2023 UW Medicine article.
Pickleball is a great aerobic exercise that is fun and interesting to do. Even though it is a low-intensity sport, it still works out your entire body. With great physical health benefits, pickleball can also increase mental health, leaving it to be an all-around beneficial sport. This type of physical activity releases endorphins, leaving you in a better mood.
