Students living in Wilber Hall at the University of Southern Mississippi have launched a petition requesting security cameras in the back areas of the dormitory, following a string of bike thefts and vandalism. The petition, which began on January 28, has garnered over 180 signatures.
The petition highlights ongoing concerns about bikes being stolen or damaged at the dorm’s bike racks. Due to the absence of surveillance cameras, victims have been left without evidence to report the incidents. Students hope the installation of cameras will not only serve as proof in case of theft but also deter future threats and ensure nighttime safety.
“I signed it because I feel like it is unsafe walking back, like when it is really dark outside,” said Kendal Richardson, a first-year student and Wilber Hall resident. “I feel a bit unsafe walking with no protection. I’ve had my own bike taken, and I have no idea how to get it back because there are no cameras or anything.”
Richardson, whose bike was stolen at the start of the fall 2024 semester, said her bike was locked when it was taken, with the lock left behind. Several other students have shared similar stories of their bikes disappearing despite being locked.
Joanna Kur, another Wilber Hall resident, described her frustration after losing her second bike to theft while living on campus.
“I felt really overwhelmed because I have so much classwork to be doing, things to be studying, and events to attend,” Kur said. “This is just overwhelming.”
Kur reported the theft to University police, bringing the lock as evidence, but was told little could be done.
Since USM is a public university with open access, safety remains a concern for many students, especially at night. Residents are advocating for improved security, including cameras to monitor the bike racks and surrounding areas.
LaTansha Mayberry, Wilber Hall’s resident life coordinator, voiced her support for the petition and agreed that cameras are necessary.
“I believe it’s potentially unsafe because it is an open campus, and anybody can come on campus,” Mayberry said. “We do not want anyone who is off-campus and could mean us harm to come and be able to interact with my residents.”
Mayberry, known as “Ms. Mayberry” to the students, emphasized her dedication to protecting the residents in Wilber Hall.
“I call them my little hens to try to protect them and keep them safe as much as possible,” she said. “Should an incident occur, it would be nice to have cameras to ensure safety.”
Mayberry encourages students to continue advocating for campus improvements.
“I continue to let my residents know that they need to exercise their rights and continue to advocate for themselves,” Mayberry said. “In my position, I can only do so much. The students have all the power, and they should take more action in using their power to make the campus what they want it to be.”
The petition organizer, who has chosen to remain anonymous and goes by the initials G.S., concluded their statement by urging swift action: “We appeal to you to take swift action. Please sign the petition in support.”
The petition remains open to the public for signatures.
