The Sixth Annual Golden Pitch Competition, hosted by the College of Business and Economic Development at The University of Southern Mississippi, is now accepting applications from students until Feb. 26.
The competition offers college students the opportunity to present their business ideas and receive mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs. Contestants will compete for funding to support their proposals. Students from all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply, regardless of prior business experience. Applicants may compete individually or in teams of up to five, provided at least half of the group consists of Southern Miss students, and all members are enrolled in an accredited four-year university or college.
“It’s a chance to gain real-world experience, network with industry professionals, try out your public speaking skills, and potentially kickstart your own ventures,” said Ashlyn Le, a sophomore marketing student at Southern Miss.
Although Le has not competed herself, she has attended many presentations by her peers.
“Competing here is not just about winning, it’s about learning, growing, and building valuable connections for the future,” she said. “I truly love watching my friends show off their incredible business skills at this event.”
The competition's timeline is outlined in the application link available on the College of Business and Economic Development's website. In the first round, applicants submit a summary of their idea. The top 20 groups will move on to a "speed dating" mentor mixer on March 20. The final eight teams will participate in the final round from April 3-4 and April 10-11, culminating in a live finale at Scianna Hall on April 11, where the winner will be announced after completing interactive challenges.
“I think it’s a great way for students to get their foot in the door with something that they’re interested in and passionate about,” said junior Southern Miss Psychology student Aimee Schacherer. “I think a lot of times students don’t know where to start. With the competition, they’ll have someone with experience that can guide them while gaining experience in the business field.”
The Golden Pitch Competition has provided students with networking, mentorship, and funding opportunities over the past five years. Organizers hope the 2025 event will continue this success, benefiting students from various majors and disciplines.
