A tri-state recall of over 17,000 pounds of Boudin sausage, produced on January 23, has been issued due to potential contamination from pen parts.
D.J.’s Boudin LLC, a sausage production company, is recalling its Original and Jalapeño Boudin sausage in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) stated that 17,720 pounds of the product are affected. The recall has been classified as a Class I, with the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) noting a "reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."
The affected products bear the “EST. 13246” USDA mark of inspection. Consumers who purchased any of the recalled sausages are advised not to eat or serve them. The USDA recommends discarding the product or returning it to the original point of purchase.
According to the USDA, the contamination occurred after an employee at the company’s Beaumont, Texas, facility dropped a pen into the meat grinder, leading to the contamination of the sausage. The affected product, which includes packs with expiration dates ranging from February 8 to July 22, was distributed to retail stores, restaurants, and other distributors.
The recall follows a report of an oral injury from a consumer, the only reported injury to date. The FSIS encourages any individuals who suffer injury from consuming the contaminated sausage to contact a healthcare provider.
Sean Dearman, meat department manager at Corner Market, a local grocery store, confirmed the recall.
“We have pulled the Boudin we had on shelves and given refunds for customers wanting them,” Dearman said. “This whole situation shows how careful people in this line of work have to be when they're responsible for making something people eat daily.”
