Fifty students from the School of Marketing traveled to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, gaining valuable behind-the-scenes experience at one of the nation's largest sporting events. The five-day program allowed students to work in various capacities, including ticket scanning, event security, and media operations.
The program, in partnership with Allied Universal, a national leader in event security, gave students the opportunity to assist with scanning 85,000 tickets, including 40,000 on the day before the game. Students were also involved in ticket scanning and security at the Super Bowl media center and events at the convention center.
Lawrence Marks, a graduate assistant at the School of Marketing, described the experience as a unique opportunity for students pursuing careers in sports management.
“They are able to gain experience with real-life scenarios…,” said Marks. “…and customer service and being able to problem-solve on the go.”
Marks added that students were able to work in the media center, where they had the chance to meet players and celebrities. He personally saw Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels during the event.
“Overall, the trip was definitely an unforgettable experience,” said Marks. “We will definitely have to look into another Super Bowl trip in the future.”
For some students, the experience shifted their career goals. Olivia Walker, a hospitality and tourism major, said the Super Bowl opened her eyes to new possibilities within the event planning industry.
“This being on my resume can show future co-workers that, hey, she has experience in this,” said Walker. “She can probably actually help us plan and get to actually help work the event details.”
In addition to their work, students explored the Super Bowl Experience, toured NFL memorabilia, and visited the Superdome. The trip provided a blend of hands-on learning and personal enjoyment for the students, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
