Southern Miss women’s tennis (4-5, 0-2 Sun Belt) secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Alcorn State (4-12) on Wednesday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. The Golden Eagles swept the doubles point and won three consecutive singles matches to clinch the win.
The victory ended a four-match losing streak for Southern Miss and improved their home record to 4-2 this season.
The Golden Eagles dominated doubles play, securing the point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Gagana Mohan Kumar and Talia Wunnenberg earned a 6-3 win at No. 2, while the duo of Sakura Sudo and Miranda Xu claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
In singles action, Wunnenberg added to the Golden Eagles' lead with a walkover win at the No. 6 spot. Malannia Vashkevich extended the lead to 3-0 on court two after taking the first set 6-1 before her opponent retired. Sudo then sealed the match for Southern Miss with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4.
Southern Miss was ahead in three other singles matches when play was halted. Xu held an advantage at No. 3, Jordan Parker led at No. 5, and Hannah Chambers was battling in the second set on court one.
The Golden Eagles have now won 13 consecutive matches against Alcorn State, dating back to 2005.
Southern Miss will look to carry this momentum into their next match when they travel to Huntington, West Virginia, to face Marshall in Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday.
