Southern Miss Career Services hosts career fairs throughout March to help students and job seekers connect with potential employers for career positions, part-time work, and internships.
The Education Career Fair took place on March 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Payne Center, featuring employers from school districts in Mississippi and Louisiana. The event saw strong student turnout. The Business Career Fair followed on March 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Scianna Hall, with 31 employers attending. Finally, the Career and Graduate School Fair was held on March 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center Ballroom, with 43 employers and schools attending.
“I’m here to make connections and see what kind of employer I’m looking for,” said Rachael Smith, an Elementary Education major who attended the Education Fair.
As a junior, Smith said she did not attend the fair with the intent of securing a job but for the opportunity to explore her options.
“I want to see what kind of school district I would like to work for in the future,” she explained. “That way, I have more of a game plan next year when I am looking for a job.”
Southern Miss Career Services provides these opportunities to students of all majors and classifications at no cost. Registration is not required for attendance, and students can explore career paths, gain insights into various industries, and connect with professionals. Attendees also have the chance to present resumes, practice elevator pitches, and make valuable first impressions in a professional environment.
“It’s good to know that USM has these types of events available for students,” said Sheriden Cannon, a Public Relations major.
Cannon, like Smith, is a junior and not actively seeking a job in the near future. She noted that the Business Career Fair would offer the most relevant opportunities for her intended industry. Cannon expressed appreciation for the career fairs as a resource for her post-graduation planning.
“I’m more confident about my future knowing that the Career Center is there to help me plan for after I graduate,” Cannon said.
By attending the fairs, students can gain experience in professional settings, expand their networks, and take steps toward their career goals, even if they are not yet seeking employment.
