Students interested in joining the Southern Miss Activities Council (SMAC) can apply online through March 28. The council is responsible for planning various campus events and activities throughout the year.
The application is available on the SMAC Instagram account. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be enrolled at Southern Miss. SMAC seeks students who demonstrate leadership potential, a positive attitude, and a willingness to fully commit to the organization. Applicants are encouraged to show an understanding of SMAC’s goals, and communication skills will be heavily emphasized in the selection process.
As part of the application, students will answer essay-style questions regarding their involvement on campus, previous leadership roles, and event-planning experience. Applicants who meet the requirements will be invited to group interviews on April 7 or 8 in the Leadership and Student Involvement (LSI) conference room. Those who advance will be notified via email on April 9 and will be scheduled for individual interviews on April 10 or 11, also in the LSI conference room. Final selections will be communicated through congratulatory emails with further instructions for accepted members.
“SMAC is an organization that’s super important to Southern Miss’ campus, and every event I’ve been to has been fun,” said sophomore Lucas Gonzalez. “I think it’s great that their events are free and open to all students. I haven’t really thought about applying, but it sounds like a great opportunity to get more involved.”
SMAC is a student-run, student-funded organization that aims to enhance the Southern Miss experience by hosting diverse and inclusive events for all students. Recent SMAC events include a showing of Mean Girls in collaboration with the Office of Community and Belonging and a Mental Health Day. Upcoming spring events include a Crawfish Fest on April 25 from 4-7 p.m. and a Late Night Meal on April 30 from 9-11 p.m., both in Spirit Park.
Joining SMAC offers students leadership experience, event-planning skills, marketing opportunities, and the chance to make a positive impact on campus life.
