Kappa Delta Sorority at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted its annual "Chips and Cheese with KD" fundraising event on March 17 to support Prevent Child Abuse America and the Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center.
From 5 to 9 p.m., members of the community gathered at the Kappa Delta house to purchase nachos, with proceeds benefiting the two organizations. Tickets were priced at $5 for nachos and $8 for nachos and a drink, with options of chicken or beef and a variety of toppings, including lettuce, sour cream, jalapeños, and salsa.
Guests were served by Kappa Delta members and had the choice to dine in or take their meals to go. Eighty percent of the event’s profits were allocated to the Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center in Hattiesburg, while the remaining 20% went to Prevent Child Abuse America.
Hannah Grace Reed, Kappa Delta’s vice president of events and programming, led the planning efforts for the event, which included securing donations, purchasing food and drinks, and decorating the house.
“I wanted to make sure that the event looked as good as possible and that it is something that all of Kappa Delta can be proud of,” Reed said.
A table was set up at the event with informational pamphlets about Kids Hub, which provides advocacy services for children in the Hattiesburg area. Kids Hub aims to create an environment where children feel “Heard, Supported, Protected, and Comforted” throughout their experience with the organization.
“This benefits Prevent Child Abuse America and Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center by raising both funds and awareness for these causes,” Reed added.
Kappa Delta President Scottlyn Slay said she appreciates the community’s support for the event and enjoys seeing everyone come together.
“Seeing how our communities support our philanthropic efforts is my favorite part,” Slay said.
In addition to supporting child advocacy organizations, Kappa Delta also works with the Girl Scouts of America. During the Chips and Cheese event, local Girl Scouts were invited to sell cookies outside the sorority house.
“My favorite part of Chips and Cheese was getting to see all the effort put into action and how amazing the event can be, and how it impacts those involved,” Reed said.
