Under the Mississippi sun, standing on a scaffold with music blasting, GONZO247 moves almost as fast as the wind. Paintbrush in hand, he transforms a blank wall on the outside of a Hattiesburg building into a vibrant canvas, filled with colors that mirror the city’s energy.
GONZO247, a Houston-based graffiti artist and muralist, is known for his large-scale, vibrant works. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, he became a key figure in legitimizing street art as a respected form of artistic expression.
“I started actually writing graffiti when I was 13, but I knew that I was artistically inclined and I knew that I wanted to pursue art as a career,” GONZO247 said.
From an early age, GONZO247 knew art was his calling.
“It took me 25 years before I actually caught my rhythm … don’t chase the money, chase the passion,” GONZO247 explained.
Over the years, GONZO247 transitioned from sneaking around and tagging public spaces to creating commissioned pieces around the world. His work has left a mark in places such as California, New York, Florida, Mexico, France, and now Mississippi. For him, these pieces show how street art, once stigmatized, is now celebrated.
Though graffiti often carries a negative stereotype, GONZO247 believes art is art, no matter its origins.
“If people love it, no one cares if it’s illegal,” he said.
In each of his works, GONZO247 incorporates emotion, attention, and dedication, capturing the culture of the cities where he paints. He believes art is not only on the walls but in the people who pass by every day.
GONZO247 is not only an artist but also a mentor.
“He’s been a big influence,” said Jojo, GONZO247’s assistant. “I started painting by doing stuff with my friends, but he taught me the ropes and the business side of things … brought that inner artist in me out.”
Jojo has worked with GONZO247 for years, and their collaboration has given him opportunities to express himself and build a successful career.
“Art saved my life,” Jojo said. “Without art, I wouldn’t have money or be in the position I’m in today.”
The 16-year-old boy who used to skip school to visit GONZO247’s graffiti shop is now traveling the world with him, bringing life to cities through art.
“Walking around seeing my murals in the neighborhood, there’s no better feeling,” Jojo added.
GONZO247’s name carries its own story. He explains how “Gonzo” comes from the famous Muppet, whose enthusiasm, eccentric personality, and passion mirror his approach to art. The “247” in his name reflects how often he would paint—24/7.
For those looking to experience one of GONZO247’s works, his latest mural can be found at 201 W. Pine Street in Hattiesburg. The city is now home to a piece of his artistry.
