With the May 7 deadline fast approaching, Mississippians are urged to obtain a REAL ID if they plan to board flights or enter certain federal facilities. Without it, travelers will be unable to use their standard state IDs for domestic air travel.
The REAL ID Act, enacted in 2005, was designed to enhance security and set national standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all U.S. travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant identification at airport security checkpoints. This means that a standard Mississippi driver’s license or ID card will no longer be accepted for domestic flights.
Mississippians can obtain a REAL ID by visiting a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and providing necessary documentation. These documents include proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport), Social Security card, and proof of Mississippi residency (like a utility bill or lease agreement). After submission, applicants will receive their new ID, which will bear a gold star in the upper right corner, indicating that it meets federal standards.
While the REAL ID is necessary for air travel and entry to federal buildings, it’s important to note that it is not required for other activities such as driving, voting, or purchasing alcohol. Residents who do not travel by air or enter federal facilities can continue to use their current IDs.
The implementation of the REAL ID has faced criticism for its cost and potential inconvenience. Some argue that it places an undue burden on residents, especially those in rural areas with limited access to DMV offices.
“The name itself is confusing,” said Koyia Bates. “It’s enough to have to go to the DMV when your license expires, now this.”
Local DMVs across Mississippi are offering extended hours and are taking appointments to help reduce wait times for those applying for their REAL IDs. To avoid delays, people are encouraged to visit the Mississippi Department of Public Safety website or call ahead to find the nearest office with available appointments.
Mississippians still uncertain about whether their current IDs are REAL ID-compliant can check the Mississippi Department of Public Safety website for more information on how to determine if they need to upgrade. The department also encourages early action to ensure travelers are ready before the deadline to avoid any disruptions.
