A new sound is emerging from the University of Southern Mississippi. Six Days Later, a band made up of four USM freshmen, is currently recording two singles with Petal Dance Records. The group plans to release the songs this summer, leading up to an EP later in the year.
Describing their sound as a blend of pop punk and third-wave emo with occasional metalcore influences, the band draws inspiration from artists such as Paramore, Blessthefall and We Came As Romans.
The group includes KJ Marbry, Ry Cooper, Jon Shute and Seb Mike. Cooper and Marbry, co-leads and co-founders of the band, met through a mutual friend over breakfast and bonded over their shared love of music. They began recording song covers in Cooper’s dorm and eventually decided to form a band.
“Six Days Later actually formed as me and KJ’s brainchild, because it was our thought over that span of days of like ‘We should start a band,’” said Cooper, the group’s guitarist.
Cooper recruited his roommate, Jon Shute, to join the band. Initially considered for rhythm guitar, Shute was instead asked to play bass. Though he had no prior experience, he committed to learning the instrument.
Drummer Seb Mike joined the group after Cooper discovered he had percussion experience. The four-piece band was then complete, with Marbry on vocals, Cooper on guitar, Shute on bass and Mike on drums.
“If you’re like I don’t know if I’ll like this, listen,” Cooper said. “Give it a listen, that’s the only way you’ll figure out.”
Six Days Later plans to share more music in the coming months.
