In honor of its 75th anniversary, the Hattiesburg Zoo is inviting members of the community to share their personal memories and photos from past visits.
Community members are encouraged to submit stories of 500 words or fewer detailing their experiences at the zoo. Submissions may also include photos, which do not have to correspond with the stories. Images can feature animals, guests posing with animals, or any moment captured during a visit.
“All of the stories and photos that are submitted, will be entered into a drawing,” said Special and Seasonal Events Coordinator Gabrielle Nordan. “The winner of the drawing will get a backstage pass for the zoo for four people.”
The Hattiesburg Zoo first opened in 1950 as the Kamper Park Zoo. Over the years, the zoo has expanded its exhibits and facilities.
“We opened in 1950 as Kemper Park Zoo and over the last 75 years we have grown immensely,” said Nordan. “We’ve added the Africa Pavilion with our giraffes, we have hyenas now, we've had two baby hyenas and so we're really excited this year to celebrate 75 years of the Hattiesburg Zoo.”
A year-long celebration begins April 26 with a kickoff event at the zoo. Following that, special events will be held every other Saturday through the remainder of the year.
Nordan also shared a personal memory from her childhood visits to the zoo.
“I remember being able to walk straight into the Prairie Dog Tunnel,” she said. “Last year at Lights of the Wild, I almost got stuck because I’ve grown a little bit.”
University of Southern Mississippi senior Macayla Douglas visited the zoo during the summer of 2024 and described it as a fun experience.
“I’d totally recommend people to go,” said Douglas. “I think it’s so fun, it’s a great way to connect with your family and friends, the animals are super cool to see, and I think it’s a great way to pass time.”
Submissions are open through Sept. 27, 2025. Participants can visit hattiesburgzoo.com or email [email protected] to share their stories and photos.
