When their playing days are over, many former athletes stay connected to sports through coaching, training or media, using their experience to influence the next generation of players and fans.
For many athletes, the transition away from competing can be difficult. The routine practices, the adrenaline rushes and the feel of being part of a team are hard to leave behind. Yet sports remain at the center of their lives, and many find new ways to channel their passion once the whistle blows on their careers.
One of the most common paths is coaching. Former athletes frequently return to their sport to teach young players or even professionals the skills and discipline they once practiced themselves.
“I like to think being an ex-player turned coach is a cheat code,” said James Calhoun, former running backs coach at PCS High School.
Calhoun’s firsthand experience gave him credibility and insight that a textbook can’t offer.
In today’s game, some former professional athletes have taken on roles as head coaches or position coaches. One notable example is Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, now head football coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
Another popular route is media. Some former athletes turn to photography to stay close to the sport they love.
“Once I stopped playing volleyball, I just couldn’t let it go,” said USM Creative intern Jada Hayes. “One way I found that I could stay around the sport was capturing the moments I wish I could’ve seen when I was a player.”
Some athletes even become sports broadcasters after retirement. Networks value former players for their unique perspectives, as they can break down plays and share personal stories from their time in the game. Viewers may also feel a stronger connection to former players they once watched carry their favorite teams to wins and championships. Notable athlete-turned-broadcasters include Shaquille O’Neal, Tony Romo and Robert Griffin III. These athletes competed at the top of their respective sports, from O’Neal’s multiple championships to Griffin’s Heisman Trophy, giving them a depth of knowledge most fans do not have.
When an athlete’s playing days are over, there are many avenues to stay involved in sports. Beyond coaching or media, some become trainers, agents or even owners. As the world of sports continues to grow, more opportunities are opening up for former athletes to remain part of the game.
