On Sunday September 7th Southern Miss women's soccer (1-5-1, 0-0-0 in conference) saw their first win in a 1-0 defensive stand against Louisiana Tech, who was in their fifth and final game away from home.
Southern Miss got straight to the point with a goal from Ryan Smith to follow an assist from freshman, Lorilee Taylor.
After this goal, the Lady Eagles would be in the driver's seat for much of the game ahead. They would do so through dominant offensive play, and lockdown defense. The back line would be anchored by goalkeeper Maddie Ellis, who logged 88 minutes in net. For the last two minutes, Southern Miss subbed in Lena Blake behind Ellis to finish the job. The Southern Miss defensive unit would hold Louisiana Tech to only one shot on goal the entire game.
On the contrary, the Lady Eagles created many opportunities of their own. In tandem with the six shots Southern Miss finished with, they also finished with a 3-0 advantage over Louisiana Tech when it came to second half corner kicks.
Raquelle Mitchell and Zayla Reagan combined to make many attack opportunities happen.
As this team slowly ramps up play defensively and offensively, the Lady Eagles are beginning to find their identity.
The Lady Eagles will continue their homestand when they host Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday September 10th at 4pm.
