Southern Miss volleyball defeated the University of Louisiana last Friday at the Southern Miss Wellness Center, improving its overall record to 13-4.
The USM Lady Eagles (13-4, 3-0) dominated much of the game, but Louisiana kept the match competitive, with both teams tied five times in the first set. Toward the end, the Cajuns sent a ball out of bounds, giving the Golden Eagles the edge. Emily Davis, Sadie McAda and Brynn Botkin capitalized on Louisiana’s mistakes to keep the game alive, helping USM win the first set 33-31.
Louisiana came back strong in the second set, with a tied score of 19. Lillie Johnson broke the tie with a powerful ace that shifted momentum in USM’s favor. Kennedy Gustafson scored the winning point to secure the set 26-24.
The Golden Eagles closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the final set. McAda led the team with 13 kills, Botkin added 12, Davis totaled four blocks, Morgan Durgens recorded 31 assists, and Sunni Sheppard finished with four digs.
Southern Miss will face South Alabama in Mobile on Friday, Oct. 17.
