Southern Miss (12-7-1) defeated the University of New Orleans Privateers (8-12) on Tuesday in New Orleans. Southern Miss has won nine out of its previous 12 games and five of its last six games.
Southern Miss headed into the game looking for a win against UNO after losing to them at home on Feb. 18, 7-6.
During the fourth inning, Privateer Parker Jones reached third base on a fielding error by the Golden Eagles. Runners came in to score, making it a one-run game at 3-2 with the Privateers leading the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles were down for the majority of the game, but broke out in the eighth inning.
With runners on second and third, Matt Dawson flied out to center field, bringing in Breck Kline from third to score the tying run of the game.
The game between the Golden Eagles and the Privateers went to extra innings, tied up at three going into the top of the tenth.
In the tenth inning, Nick Dawson stepped up to the plate after Michael Sterling stole second. Sterling got on base by an error, putting Austin Roussel at third. Dawson flied out to center field, bringing in Roussel in from third to score. The score gave the Golden Eagles the lead at 4-3.
When James Lear got to the plate, the Golden Eagles looked to score. After Connor Barron was caught trying to steal second base, Michael Sterling scored from third making it a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the tenth for the Privateers.
After USM got the lead, UNO answered. Jay Robinson singled to right field then advanced to second on a passed ball. After Ryan Calloway singled to first base, Robinson advanced to third. Jonathan Coco drove in Robinson to score and put the Privateers behind USM by just one.
Cameron Hoffman came in to pinch hit for the Privateers but struck out looking. After a error by Roussel, Calloway came in to score from third, tying the game up at 5-5.
The Golden Eagles had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the 11th inning. The Privateers went to the bullpen to bring out their eighth pitcher of the night to combat the Southern Miss bats.
Kline stepped up to the plate and flied out to right field, but Lear came in to the score from third and Braley advanced into scoring position at third. The bases were loaded again as Roussel was walked and Chase Scott advanced to second. The Golden Eagles had put the game away with the score from Lear.
Sterling set a career-high in steals in the game with 2 stolen bases.
Cord Cockrell got his third start on the season against UNO. Cockrell pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, six hits and only gaining one strikeout. The two teams combined to use 13 pitchers in the extra-inning contest.
Junior first basemen Tim Lynch served a one-game suspension for being ejected against FIU.
Southern Miss will play Louisiana Tech this weekend for a three game series in Ruston, Louisiana, beginning Friday.
