Southern Miss QB Trey Lowe announces he has entered the transfer portal

HATTIESBURG, Ms – Southern Miss quarterback Trey Lowe has announced he is entering his name in the transfer portal. This move might be a shock, given that Lowe had cemented himself as QB1 since the end of the 2022 season.

From his social media account: “Thanks to all of my coaches, teammates, the entire staff and the fans. Forever #SMTTT
Officially in the portal, two years of eligibility.”

Lowe led the Golden Eagles to their first bowl game victory since 2016 in the 2022 LendingTree Bowl. Lowe came to Southern Miss in 2020 ahead of the Covid season for Southern Miss, which led to so much uncertainty within the program.

Lowe enjoyed his best game in the season finale against FAU. With new head coach Will Hall watching from the sidelines, Lowe threw for 209 yards in the air on 13-of-19 with his first two TD passes and an interception. He hit Jason Brownlee for a 29-yard touchdown pass and a 5-yarder to Tim Jones. Lowe rushed for 104 yards on 44 carries with a score in that contest.

He was the clear No. 1 going into the 2021 season. Unfortunately for him, he started the first two games in 2021 before getting hurt in the first half versus Grambling, and he was sidelined for the rest of the season.

Lowe only appeared once at the beginning of the 2022 season, where he threw an interception against Liberty. Southern Miss head coach Will Hall said that it was not his fault. Fate would have it that Lowe would get another shot, and he started against Coastal Carolina in the team’s tenth game. Lowe almost led the team to upset the Chanticleers in Conway, but he did lead them to Southern Miss’s first bowl game since 2019 and first bowl victory since 2016.

Southern Miss has added several QBs within the transfer portal and with commits.

“We finally killed that fly with a hammer.” Hall said about the status of the QB room on signing day.
