USM kicks off Football Season with Friday Night at Spirit Park
By Huey Turlich
The Southern Miss Alumni Association kicked off this year’s football season Sept. 1 with their Friday Night at Spirit Park event. This event is a USM tradition that brings administration, faculty, staff, alumni, students, fans and families together. This family-friendly celebration serves as the official start of the thrill and excitement of tailgating and other game day activities during football weekends.
Alumni, along with students, were able to relax and hear beats by DJ Kujho and enjoy food truck vendors ranging from wings and burgers to snowballs. Students had the chance to take a break from work and enjoy a great night out preparing for Southern Miss’ first home game. And they had the opportunity to dance the night away after the first few weeks of class and get into the school spirit.
“Tonight’s Friday Night at Spirit Park is themed as fraternity and sorority night,” said Assistant Director for Program and Events for SAA, Ashley Jones.
This year, SAA worked closely with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life to create a high-energy atmosphere due to the presence Greek life plays on campus. Not only did DJ Kujho make an appearance, but guests had the opportunity to see Cash Money and Blaze, two local therapy dogs. These two brought a little laughter and joy to the crowd.
The SAA has many more Friday Night at Spirit Park events planned for this year’s season. For more information on events held by the SAA, follow them on Instagram at @saasouthernmiss.
