On the Super Talk Eagle Hour, Southern Miss head coach Will Hall announced that he will give up play-calling this season.

“Over my time here, I know that the time it takes to run the offense and be the head coach has proven to be too much for me,” Hall said.

“We’ve done a lot of great things in managing the program and building the program, but our offense has been stagnant for far too long. And at the end of the season, man, I’m going to address that issue swiftly and urgently. In the meantime, I’m going to turn to play calling and game planning responsibilities over to Jordy Joseph and Sam Gregg for the rest of the season in hopes of creating a spark to finish the year on a high note,”

The announcement is a significant development in the 2023 football season, which is on track to be one of the worst seasons in Southern Miss football history.

“That’s going to allow me to be more involved, obviously, in the other phases of the game plan and defensively and special teams,” Hall said. “I actually did that the week of Old Dominion, and you saw we played more inspired defensively, and we had a punt return for a touchdown in that game. So, I think it’s going to be great for our offense for sure. And I think it’s going to be great, you know, in other facets of our program.”

Hall announced that assistant coaches Sam Gregg and Jordy Joseph will handle play calling and game planning moving forward. Gregg is the offensive line coach, and Joseph is the quarterback coach.

Southern Miss is currently 1-6, 0-4 in the Sun Belt, and desperate for success on the field.

Is this the way that the season starts to turn around?

Maybe so. But the bottom line is that after Tuesday’s game, something had to change, and Hall knew it. He revealed one of the team’s significant weaknesses, the play calling, and is making changes.

That is a step in the positive direction for Southern Miss football, regardless of results.

“I know we’ve got issues; that’s obvious to everybody. We’re addressing evaluating every facet of our program in every way, and we are working on fixing the things we can fix right now. As well as looking at what the future is going to bring….” Hall said.

Southern Miss takes on Appalachian State next Saturday at 2:30 PM.

Will hall is a good dude although he is a questionable coach at least he is taking a step in the right direction with handing over play calling. Maybe it will help to reduce injuries also.
