The Southern Miss Anime Club is off to a strong start this semester with an exciting selection of anime shows for its members to enjoy.
The USM Anime Club provides a space for anime enthusiasts to gather and share their passion for the Japanese-originated genre. Anime has captivated audiences worldwide for decades with its unique storytelling, breathtaking animation, and rich cultural elements. At the beginning of each semester, the club votes on which shows to watch, and this semester, members have selected five distinctive titles: Samurai Champloo, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, Restaurant to Another World, Nanbaka, and Trigun Stampede.
For many, anime is a niche interest, and finding others who share the same enthusiasm can be difficult. The USM Anime Club creates a space where students can connect over a mutual love for the genre. Each week, the club watches one episode from each selected show and takes scheduled breaks for socializing, games, and discussions.
Shelby Jones, a club member, shared her thoughts on joining the club.
“I joined the club last semester,r and I was excited to meet people who had similar interests as me,” Jones said. “It was refreshing to be surrounded by people who shared my love for anime while being able to watch new shows with new people.”
The club also allows members to bring snacks, games, or other items such as collectibles or manga collections. Some even cosplay during meetings to showcase their creativity.
Luke Brust, a physics major and president of the club, is responsible for planning events and overseeing meetings. He ensures that the anime selections are appropriate for all members and coordinates with other clubs for smooth operations. Brust spoke about what he enjoys most about the club.
“The thing I enjoy most about the club is being able to watch all of these great shows with these wonderful people,” Brust said. “It’s a good opportunity to get people together to socialize and bond over a shared love of this whole genre.”
Since its creation, the Anime Club has successfully brought students together and continues to offer a fun, inclusive space for those passionate about anime.
