Southern Miss concluded its home schedule with losses to Marshall, 3-1, and Western Kentucky, 2-0, over the weekend.
Kelly and Kristine Culicerto combined for all three of Marshall’s goals Friday as the Thundering Herd raced to a 3-0 lead. Kristine scored the first goal in the 26th minute, while Kelly padded the lead in both the 33rd and 56th minutes.
Becky McMullan got the Golden Eagles on the board in the 65th minute off an assist from Adriana Garcia, but the USM offense was held in check for the rest of the game. True freshman goalkeeper Shelby Presnell surrendered three goals, while saving six.
Southern Miss’ offensive struggles continued against Western Kentucky Sunday, managing just five shots on goal out of their 16 total shots.
It was a defensive struggle early on as the game was scoreless heading into halftime. Iris Dunn ended that in the 54th minute with a header to give the Hilltoppers the lead. Lauren Moats added to the lead in the 73rd minute on a free kick.
It was the final home game for the Golden Eagles’ six seniors: Casey Adkins, Anya Koren, Missy Wentz, Conner Mckie, Ashley Johnson and Brooke Hendrix.
Southern Miss (5-10-3, 0-6-3) will look for its first conference win in its final regular season game against UTSA on the road in San Antonio, Texas Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
