The Golden Eagles played three matches in San Antonio, Texas, over the weekend, concluding play Monday with their only win of the road trip.

On Saturday, Southern Miss fell in a close match to UT Arlington, 4-3. The Golden Eagles won both of their doubles matches to get point, but lost four out of the six singles matches.

“The team got off to a good start in doubles winning convincingly at No. 1 and No. 3,” head coach Zubin Engineer said. “Everyone competed well and we came up a little short in singles.”

Wen-Po Tseng had the best day for USM as he teamed up with Chao-Yu Huang for a 6-1 win in doubles and won his singles match over Stefan Williams 6-3, 7-6.

On Sunday, USM had arguably its worst performance of the season, falling 6-1 to UTSA.

Alex Doleac was the only USM player to pick up a point, winning his singles match in three sets over Joao Riquelme, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

USM got redemption Monday with a 5-2 win over Incarnate Word, improving its overall record to 5-3 for the season.

Doleac and Brad Marriott picked up the only win for USM in doubles action, but it was not enough as Southern Miss failed to pick up the point.

“The doubles was difficult in very windy and cold conditions,” Engineer said.

Huang, Mikhail Esipov, Doleac and Daniel Merker all won their singles matches to secure the win for the Golden Eagles. Huang, Esipov and Doleac each won in two sets while it took three for Merker.

Merker fell in the first set to Philipp Raickovic, 6-7, but battled back to win the final two sets at 6-2 in each.

“In singles, the team stepped up and took responsibility, winning five out of six singles matches to secure a 5-2 team win,” Engineer said. “This was a good weekend where the team gained experience and learned about themselves and other teams.”

The Golden Eagles will continue their season Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. when they host South Alabama.
