USM volleyball sweeps La Tech

The Southern Miss volleyball team swept Louisiana Tech Sunday to earn their third conference win and 12th overall in Ruston, La.

USM won the three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22.  The loss dropped La Tech to 7-15 and 1-6 in conference play.

Sophomore standout Quinci Hayward led the charge with 14 kills and Jasmine Crowell chipped in nine.  Kristen Fleming finished the match with 38 assists while Mary Pursell picked up nine digs.

USM out-hit Louisiana Tech .261 to .182 and played consistently better besides the rough start in the third set when they trailed 7-4.  Louisiana Tech had 19 errors in the match.

Crowell led USM in hitting percentage post a .438.  Xzache Mathis led La Tech with 14 kills, but struggled to be consistent as she had a team high seven errors and a hitting percentage of .219.

Southern Miss will travel to take on Mid Tennessee State on Friday and Tulsa on Sunday.

It could be a rough weekend for USM as the Blue Raiders are 5-2 in conference play and Tulsa is undefeated at 7-0 in the conference.
