The Southern Miss volleyball team dropped both games of its Florida road trip, losing to Florida Atlantic in four sets and Florida International in five sets.

On Oct. 19, Southern Miss and FAU battled through two close sets to start off the match, but FAU was able to squeeze out wins of 25-22 and 27-25 to take an advantage in the first two sets over the Golden Eagles. However, Southern Miss fought back and delivered a 25-21 win in the third match.

In the fourth set, the two teams played a close battle, but FAU was ultimately able to fend off Southern Miss’ comeback attempt, winning the final set 27-25. Senior Kylie Grandy ended the night with a game-high 21 kills and also tacked on an additional 15 digs. Senior Alexis Coombs also added another 13 kills and fellow senior Sarah Bell added 53 assists.

The Golden Eagles as a whole posted a total of 61 kills and ended the match with a .273 hitting percentage, along with 56 assists and eight blocks.

Southern Miss turned around and played FIU on Oct. 21. The Golden Eagles started off the match strong, scoring wins of 25-21 and 29-27 in the opening two sets. However, FIU quickly fought back, with 25-21 and 25-23 victories in the third and fourth sets to tie the contest at 2-2. Continuing with its momentum, FIU closed out the game with a 15-13 victory in the fifth set.

Southern Miss ended the match with a total of 74 kills and 37 errors. The Golden Eagles posted just a .191 hitting percentage and also tacked on two aces. Bell led the crew, recording 62 assists and adding on an additional 23 digs. Sophomore Chandler Marshall also added an additional 22 kills.

The match dropped the Golden Eagles to 11-12 and 4-5 in C-USA play. The Golden Eagles return back home to Reed Green Coliseum on Tuesday, as they host Southeastern Louisiana.
