Foundation to host second 5k

Foundation+to+host+second+5k

The Greater PineBelt Community Foundation will host its second 5k event on Nov. 13, with registration starting at 2 p.m. and the walk/ run starting at 3 p.m. outside The University of Southern Mississippi’s Payne Center.

The proceeds of the event will benefit the Pine Belt area’s local Community Foundation. The event is called Turkey Trot 5k – We’re “Overall” Thankful for our Community. Participants are encouraged to wear overalls or a turkey costume as they walk or run the 5k. In addition, all nonprofits or churches who have an endowment are encouraged to set up a booth to showcase how they serve our community.

There will be door prizes, special prizes for race winners and they will be led by a turkey. In addition, local artist Vixon Sullivan has created ceramic artwork for the overall winners, and DJ Kujho will entertain the crowd.

The main purpose of this event is to bring together all local nonprofits, especially those who have a “charitable savings account” with the Pine Belt Community Foundation. The Foundation’s 5k gives participants the opportunity to become a “Friend of the Foundation,” an annual giving opportunity that supports your local Community Foundation which helps the infrastructure of our nonprofits, churches and school.

The Community Foundation is reaching out to young professionals to encourage their participation in philanthropy. The PineBelt Community Foundation will give a $500 grant to the fraternity or sorority with the highest percentage of participants. This grant will benefit the nonprofit philanthropy that the fraternity or sorority endorses.

The Community Foundation is a 501(c)(3), allowing gifts to be tax deductible as allowed by law.
