With nine different Golden Eagles scoring, the team tied the school record for goals scored in a match in their 10-0 win over Jackson State.

“This was a great showing for our team,” said Head Coach Mohammed El-Zare said. “I’m really proud of the way we performed and it was great to see some of our new players score and show their talent with quality minutes.”

The Golden Eagles took advantage of the Lady Tigers as Jackson State is a winless team and has now been outscored by their opponents 45-1.

Southern Miss outshot Jackson St. 16-0 in the first half. Junior Kierstin Bradly helped the Golden Eagles get out to a fast start by scoring the first goal within the first three minutes of the match. Senior Becky McMullen followed scoring the second goal and continues to lead the team in goals with five. Junior Stephanie Garcia, senior Allie Baumhower, freshman Miah Zuaza and two goals from freshman Mariana Mejia put the Golden Eagles up 7-0 at halftime.

The second half was much like the first as the Golden Eagles continued to press the Lady Tiger’s defense by outshooting them again, 15-4. This time junior Kaitlin Fayard, freshman Brittney Rankins and freshman Mackenzie Hamilton tacked on the next three goals.

Baumhower, Fayard, Rankins and Hamilton scored their first goals of the season and Mariana’s two goals were her first two of the season.

“Having nine different players scoring is good confidence for everyone,” El-Zare said. “But the conference is a different ball game, every game counts. UTEP is a very strong team, they are a tough and physical team.”

The Golden Eagles will start conference play at home against University of Texas at El Paso on Sunday at 1 p.m.
