Track and field competes at Warkhawk Classic

The Southern Miss track team continued its season at the Warhawk Classic in Monroe, Louisiana. The Golden Eagles had five event winners and set a school record.

The teams in attendance were The University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Grambling, Alcorn State, Southern Arkansas, Northwestern State, McNeese State and Louisiana College.

The women’s sprinters were led by second and third places in the 100m dash. Freshman Rickianna Patterson ran 12.03 to finish second, and sophomore Keiyana Gaskin ran 12.05 to finish in third place, respectively. In the 200m dash, sophomore Shundoria Hardy finished in 16th place with a time of 26.88. In the 400m dash, juniors Chenelle Ricketts and Rian Robinson also finished in second and third place with times of 56.33 and 57.13.

The men’s sprinters saw the most success with wins in the 100m and 200m dash. Senior Alexander Richemond won the 100m dash with a time of 10.68, and junior McKinely West placed second with a time of 10.70. In the 200m dash, senior Cra’Vorkian Carson won the event with a time of 21.82. Junior Lorenzon Burton finished in second place in the 400m dash with a time of 49.81 The men’s 4X100 relay team won the race, running a time of 39.76.

In the women’s 100m hurdles,freshman Callie Jones and senior Talia Thompson ran 14:84 and 15:06 to finish in fourth and sixth, respectively. In the 400m hurdles, Thompson finished in second place running 1:02.65 while senior Brooklyn Polk finished in fifth running 1:05.27. In long jump, Jones jumped 5.65m to finish second place, respectively. In the triple jump, freshman Adrianna Mitchell also finished in second place with a jump of 11.48m.

In the men’s triple jump, junior John Warren won and set the school record with a jump of 15.83m.

Junior Danisha Jones won the women’s discus with a throw of 51.10m. In the men’s shot put, sophomore Isaiah Carter threw 12.42m to finish in ninth place, respectively. Sophomore Robert Watson and senior Donald Daley finished in second and third place with throws of 59.91m and 59.04m.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on April 21 to compete in the LSU Alumni Gold Meet.
