Si Robertson, of the popular A&E series “Duck Dynasty,” is coming to Hattiesburg Feb. 1 for the Homes of Hope for Children fundraiser.
Robertson, best known as Uncle Si, will appear at Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg for a Q&A session. The event is ticketed, and all proceeds will benefit Homes of Hope for Children, a children’s home located in south Mississippi.
Homes of Hope for Children, located in Purvis, takes in children from the Hattiesburg area who are in crisis situations and are in need of a home. Children who live at Homes of Hope for Children receive counseling and therapy as well as a stable home with emotional and spiritual support from caregivers. According to the Homes of Hope for Children website, many of the children who live at the home stay until they graduate high school, and can receive support after that as well.
“Homes of Hope for Children is a Christian children’s home. We take care of abused and neglected children,” said Michael Garrett, executive director of Homes of Hope for Children. “All proceeds (from the event) will help our basic operational needs, and will help disadvantaged kids.”
Garrett said Si Robertson does not do many public appearances. “This is an extremely unique and rare experience to hear Si talk about his faith and family,” Garrett said. “He will also share some behind-the-scenes of ‘Duck Dynasty.’ It’s going to be so much fun. If you are a fan of ‘Duck Dynasty,’ it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
“Duck Dynasty” is A&E’s most popular network series. The show highlights the lives of the Robertson family who own a successful duck call business in West Monroe, La. The show recently came under fire when one of the show’s cast members, Phil Robertson, made remarks regarding homosexuality in an interview with GQ magazine.
The incident sparked a heated debate in the national media, as well as in all avenues of social media. Phil Robertson was suspended from the show for a short time. All the buzz about the show did not seem to stop its dedicated followers. “Duck Dynasty” is currently in its fifth season, and last week’s episode had more than 6 million viewers.
Si Robertson, a Vietnam War veteran, recently released a book titled “Si-cology 101: Tales and Wisdom from Duck Dynasty’s Favorite Uncle.” According to gospelherald.com, Robertson shares some of the stories from his time in Vietnam and opens up about his childhood and struggle with alcoholism and near suicide.
The event starts at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or the Homes of Hope for Children website www.hohfc.org. Garrett encourages the public to purchase tickets through the Homes of Hope for Children website, where ticket buyers will save $5 off the admission price thanks to a sponsorship by Krispy Kreme. Special meet-and-greet and preferred seating packages are available.
Homes of Hope for Children volunteers will be at the Minit Mart at Old Highway 11 and Highway 98 on Friday selling tickets. Garrett said they will have the best ticket selections available for sale on Friday.
Tickets will also be available for sale all day Saturday at Temple Baptist Church.
