At many universities, graduate school alone can feel like a full-time job. Add the demands of collegiate athletics, and the challenge becomes even greater. At the University of Southern Mississippi, one athlete is proving that it’s possible to excel in both arenas.
While most graduate students focus primarily on research, coursework and deadlines, track and field standout Saxon Brown has taken on a much heavier load. Balancing the responsibilities of advanced academics with the physical and mental demands of competition, Brown represents a new standard of what it means to be a student-athlete.
“I’ve been able to balance it a little bit more, and even going from, like, the fall, when I’m not traveling,” said Brown. “I can be up as much and just into the spring, when I am competing and traveling, basically every weekend, like that, it’s also an adjustment.
Transitioning from the fall season, when travel is limited, to the spring, where competitions can fill nearly every weekend, has required adjustment. Still, Brown has managed to find his rhythm, maintaining focus both in the classroom and on the track.
But simply keeping up isn’t the goal. Brown is exceeding expectations. His performance, whether academically or athletically, reflects discipline, consistency and drive. Those qualities haven’t gone unnoticed by his coaches or teammates.
“He’s not taken away from the group at all,” said Coach Stuart. “He’s added to the group. He’s done a great job. He’s competed well. Just a calming influence to some of the younger kids. And I think that that’s really good. And so he’s been just such a blessing to us and has been just a really important part of our team right now.”
Balancing graduate studies with a competitive athletic schedule is no easy task. Yet for Saxon Brown, that challenge is part of what defines him. His commitment to both pursuits not only sets him apart but also strengthens the culture of Southern Miss track and field.
As student-athletes continue to push the limits of what’s possible, Brown’s journey stands as a reminder that excellence doesn’t have to be confined to one arena.
