Southern Miss men’s golf finished the Sun Belt Championship in third place after falling in the morning match play. They lost 3.5-1.5 to No. 45 Arkansas State at Annandale Golf Club.
After round three, Jake Moffitt finished his back nine with a 77. The Golden Eagles moved into match play as the third seed against second-seeded Arkansas State.
Supakorn Amornchaichan beat Cole Kirby 4 and 3. The junior jumped out early with three birdies over seven holes. He carried a 3-up lead into the back nine and added two more birdies to end the match on the 15th.
Freshman Jake Moffitt earned a half-point in a tie with Jack Wallis, thanks to two eagles on the front nine. Wallis answered with birdies and an eagle to tie it at the turn. They matched scores for five holes before Wallis took a lead, but Moffitt hit four pars to force a 19th hole. Both birdied to end the match.
Arkansas State sealed it with two 3 and 2 wins over Walker Wise and Benjamin Fernandez. Wise had six pars and a birdie early, but Milan Reed took the lead on the 12th and finished with two late birdies. Fernandez was 1-up at the turn, but Jack Lile surged late, using an eagle to go 3-up with two holes left.
Matthew Javier lost 5 and 4 to Thomas Schmidt. Javier had eight pars and an eagle, but Schmidt matched him and added three birdies to secure the 3.5-1.5 victory for Arkansas State.
Southern Miss finished third overall, ending the tournament just ahead of fourth-place South Alabama.
