New student survival guide

The start of a new school year can be exciting, and at times, stressful for freshmen and transfer students.

Often this transitional period can be difficult since college is so different from high school.

Having a group of supportive friends and family is always important, especially when moving to a new town with new people.

The most challenging part of college is maintaining the balance between classes, organizations, work and social activities. Finding that balance is the key to success.

Emily Nettles, a junior kinesiotherapy major, advises freshmen to study and finish classwork earlier in the day.

“Treat studying like it’s a job,” Nettles said. “Get your work finished first so you can be involved second.”

USM also offers hundreds of organizations and clubs to fit practically any interest.

Maegan Reynolds, a sophomore broadcast journalism major and a member of Delta Gamma, said her involvement on campus helped her grow as a freshman.

“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there,” Reynolds said. “Once you start to get involved, you keep on becoming involved in other things.”
