The Southern Chorale performed a concert Tuesday, April 22, at First Trinity Presbyterian Church in Laurel honoring the music and legacy of composer James Quitman Mulholland.
Mulholland, a Laurel native, began singing at a young age and was invited to attend Louisiana State University on a full scholarship after being heard by LSU’s choral director. He previously spent a year at The University of Southern Mississippi before transferring to Baton Rouge. Over his career, Mulholland has written more than 600 compositions and developed a romantic aesthetic in his work. He celebrated his 90th birthday on March 7.
In addition to celebrating Mulholland’s music, the concert included a formal recognition of his contributions to the field. Lynne Gackle, former president of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), presented Mulholland with an honor from the organization.
“James Quitman Mulholland has demonstrated outstanding dedication, leadership, and service to the American Choral Directors Association,” Gackle said. “And whereas his contributions have significantly enriched the choral community, through his artistry, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to excellence. The association formally recognizes Mulholland and commends him for his exceptional and highly significant impact on the choral profession.”
The director of the USM School of Music opened the event with remarks about Mulholland’s influence. The concert was presented by the School of Music in collaboration with the Laurel Visitor Center and the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. Southern Miss Choral Activities alumni and guest singers also participated. The event was free and open to the public.
Each conductor selected a Mulholland composition to conduct during the program. Conductors and presenters included Gary Schwartzhoff, Lynne Gackle, Gregory Fuller, John Flanery, Jonathan Kilgore, Peter Durow, Ken Fulton, Mark Lawson, Z. Randall Stroope, and Jason Max Ferdinand. Additional presentations were made by Schott Music, ECS Publishing Group, and the American Choral Directors Association.
“Being able to honor Mulholland and his lifetime of achievements alongside so many talented performers was such a fun experience,” said Lauryn Spell, a USM student and concert choir member. “I’m always so grateful for the opportunities that the School of Music provides to its students. As well as the staff that works relentlessly to produce these experiences for us. Mulholland is truly an amazing composer and a kind person full of so much knowledge and love for music. Performing for him was such a pleasure.”
