Sharing her real emotions with the world is something Macy Necaise has always wanted to do. With music, she’s able to do exactly that.
Macy Necaise, 21, is a sound and recording arts major at The University of Southern Mississippi. She was born and raised in Gulfport. She plans to use this degree to produce her own music entirely on her own, with some of her future goals including producing her first EP and album.
Necaise writes, performs and produces her own music in her free time. She explores the genres of rock, country, pop, and rap music, which are displayed through her released music. She takes inspiration from award winning Kelly Clarkson, Tate McRae, and groups like Aly & AJ. She plays several different instruments including the guitar, drums and piano to experiment with her music style.
Necaise started her music career at the ROCK U 2 Academy, a performing arts school in Ocean Springs, where she had help producing her songs and singing covers before moving to college. She performed locally at the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi and now publishes covers and original songs on her YouTube and TikTok.
One of Necaise’s strongest inspirations is her grandmother. Macy said that when she was younger, she had never realized her potential or her passion for creating music. Her grandmother was the one who encouraged her to continue writing, helping her prepare for school talent shows, and supported her music lessons in her childhood.
“I dedicate, like, all of it to her, honestly,” Necaise said.
After losing her grandmother to cancer, Macy said that writing music was hard. She was also transitioning from high school to college, leaving her with little to no time for music. It took about a year for her to return to songwriting, but now she credits her grandmother for her return to singing and songwriting. Macy is currently in the process of producing a song dedicated to her grandmother, “If You Were Still Here.”
She was inspired as she was sitting around the table with family on Christmas, eating and talking and laughing together. It was the first year without her grandmother, and Necaise said it wasn’t quite the same. When her aunt got a phone call, Necaise wondered what it would be like if it had been her grandmother had been on the other end of the line. After spending so long trying to write a song dedicated to her grandmother, she finally found her inspiration.
“I remember playing this to my parents for the first time and I couldn’t make it through it,” Necaise said. “I just started sobbing.”
Losing a close family member is something that Necaise can connect to other people with. She stresses the importance of her family and what their support has done for her career. If it weren’t for her grandmother, Macy may have never pursued music at all. She wants to spread that message with her music and be able to connect with her audience on the importance of family.
Necaise said that the most difficult part of being a songwriter in college is finding time and motivation to write, especially since she primarily works alone. She wants to dedicate more time to her music making and performing for live audiences.
There’s also the struggle of having a community to work with; sometimes it’s better not to work alone, Necaise learned. She had attempted to work with a music producing group at Southern Miss last semester but was rejected by them. Necaise also said that she’s working on interacting with the community more in hopes of being able to share her music.
“I finally realized you need personality too,” Necaise said. “They’re not just going to hire you for your voice.”
Macy’s mother, Lisa, said that before Necaise began producing songs and performing on stage, she was shy and introverted. Lisa said that she watched as Necaise learned how to socialize and work alongside others after being an introvert for most of her life.
“She’s a different person on stage,” Lisa said. “She’s a very closed off person… but when she writes a song and puts it out there, it blows your mind that she had all this in her.”
Lisa said that she and the rest of her family are extremely proud of Macy for pursuing her dreams, and they are hoping to see her succeed with her future career.
Currently, Necaise is in the process of producing several songs in hopes of putting out her first EP in the future. She has auditioned for The Voice and American Idol and hopes that her platform grows large enough for her to release her first album, which is still in the works. Macy teased original songs “The Garden” and “Mr. Too Much Cologne” which she hopes will be in her album, but with school, a solid release date is still unknown. In the meantime, Macy just hopes to share her feelings with others and connect through her songs like “Let Us Be”.
