USM alumnus wins Jackson mayoral election

About two months after the death of Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, 36-year-old Jackson City Councilman Tony Yarber has been elected the city’s new mayor in a special election April 22. Yarber garnered 53.8 percent of the votes, edging his way past Chokwe Antar Lumumba, both Yarber’s opponent and the late mayor’s son. The newly elected mayor, who has served as an educator, pastor and councilman, is also an alumnus of The University of Southern Mississippi. Written by Alan Rawls (Managing Editor) Courtesy Photo
